Highlights from the Summit

General Information

In 2005, several organizations came together to form the Nutrition and Physical Activity Education Committee. This committee is committed to improving lifelong eating habits of children ages birth to five years old. One of the first milestones of the committee was to host a Nutrition and Physical Activity Education Summit. This exciting and informative event was held on Tuesday, November 15, 2005, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Emory Conference Center Hotel in Atlanta, Georgia.

The purpose of the summit was to share strategies and information about existing nutrition and physical activity education programs and resources and to identify current gaps in training opportunities and availability of resources. We invited childcare professionals who have a passionate interest in nutrition and physical activity education from every county in the state to attend.

Workshop presentersfrom leading organizations in Georgia were present to share their expertise on healthy eating and physical activity. These organizations included:

Bright from the Start: Georgia Department of Early Care and Learning
Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta
Georgia Department of Human Resources, Division of Public Health International
Life Sciences Institute Research Foundation, Center for Health Promotion
The University of Georgia, Cooperative Extension

Feedback from the summit was very favorable. Comments include “Great experience”, “Needed to be two days to get more information” and “It was perfect”. Bright from the Start and our partners would like to thank everyone who attended; each attendee helped to make the summit more useful, informative, and enjoyable. We would also like to recognize our presenters, whose expertise and assistance in this endeavor was essential to the success of the event.
