According to the Center for Disease Control, childhood obesity has more than doubled in children in the past 30 years. Georgia is no exception and currently has the second highest child and adolescent obesity rating in the nation. Of Georgia children who are 2-5 years old, 15.8% are classified as overweight and 13.5% are classified as obese.

Obesity at any age increases an individual’s health risk; however, now our children are experiencing diseases that typically do not occur until adulthood. It is not uncommon for overweight or obese children to have high cholesterol, high blood pressure, type two diabetes, or even sleep apnea. Georgian’s must recognize the detrimental effects this epidemic has on our youth and implement initiatives to help prevent it.

The Healthy Eating for Life project is a part of Bright from the Start’s Nutrition and Physical Activity Education initiative, in collaboration with our partners, to improve lifelong healthy eating habits and increase physical activity among children between birth and five years old and their families and caregivers. The project supports the Live Healthy Georgia Campaign and Georgia’s Nutrition and Physical Activity Plan.

Our Mission

To provide consistent information to parents, caregivers, and other child development and public health professionals related to nutrition and physical activity among children between birth and five years old.
